Selection of AF point.

Mark once again `thankyou`. I have now sorted the centre AF point . I am assuming the use of  A1 Servo whilst in the centre AF point (allowing for the subject moving during focus) wll be the correct setting to use - or - perhaps A1 focus, both in preference to `one shot` mode? that is for a non moving subject.

  1. Personally I'd leave it in AI Focus unless you know your subject's going to be moving, in which case use the AI Servo setting. AI Focus switches between Servo and One Shot, depending on whether your subject's moving or not, but there can be a delay before it recognises the subject is on the move.

However, if your subject is stationary, and you focus with the centre AF point then recompose to put the bird on one side of the frame, then in Servo mode the camera would refocus on the background, whereas AI Focus would detect that the subject isn't moving, and you've just changed composition.

    Hope that makes sense,
    Dan

  2. I never use AI Focus on the bodies that have that facility - and the 1D doesn't have that option anyway - as it's a halfway house between Servo and One Shot. For birds as they are never stationary I always use servo as with the other menu options on the 1D that gives me the best results - the 350D is different though so suggest you trial and error and see what's best for you.

Majority of time I'm using the centre AF point (with expansion when that's needed) and for 99% of the shots use spot metering on that point (1D allows you to specify spot metering on the active AF point so if you move th point around the metering goes with it but suspect the 350 doesn't have that option). And other point is that I always focus on the eye - if that's sharp I don't really care about the rest!

  3. OK armed with your info I will venture into the `Marches wilderness` over Easter, just need bit more light maybe, but that is looking doubtful.
    thanks both

  4. No problem Trevor - I normally start wherever I'm going at ISO400 and work up or down from there, on the 1D can easily get decent pics at higher ISO, just needs a bit more work in Lightroom. Start there and see what that gives you
