Wern Willow Warbler

Heard and saw my first willow warbler of the year this morning, alongside the canal on the Wern - 'singin in the rain'. Also, delighted to see a curlew fly over, calling, and a yellowhammer singing almost it's full phrase several times from an oak - both curlew and yellowhammers used to be common on the Wern, but very rarely see them now. Lifted my spirits on this damp Bank Holiday Monday!

  1. Nice - not seen or heard a willow warbler yet!

  2. Lovely way to spend Easter Monday morning. Plenty of siskin, redpoll and bramblings up here but not a willow warbler or chiff chaff to be heard. There used to be a yellowhammer or two on the common land a few years ago so perhaps there may be a revival? The year certainly does feel different.

  3. It certainly does. Surprisingly, there was a redwing down the lane this morning - and at least 4 willow warblers singing beside the towpath - 2 male blackcaps too, but still haven't seen a swallow. Loved your photo of the redpoll recently, and good to hear that you're now getting those - we've only see an occasional odd one here all winter. Keeping fingers crossed that your yellowhammers might return.
