Small Canada Goose

For the last 2 days (at least) there has been a Small Canada Goose (?Minima sp) at Llyn Coed-y-Dinas. As the photo shows, it is often with the Barnacle and slightly smaller than it with a darker chest/neck, more white on face and a stubby bill compared to the nominate species. Any experts out there to discuss the ID? I wonder where all these "escapes" come from?

  1. Chris - we used to have one at Porthmadog Cob for years, also as a kid in the 70's I saw a few on the Foryd near Caernarfon.
I used to call them Taverner's Goose but with the advent of DNA analysis recently the 'splitters' are having a field day with several species and sub-species now classified.
Sibley wrote a great article on this recently ..
