Kestrel, water rail, a pair of goosander and a good sized flock of fieldfares and redwings all showing well on Wern today. Also siskins feeding in alders, and a charm of 30+ goldfinches, plus a cormorant.
Have there been any sightings of the hawfinches in Powis Park since 31st Dec? We watched for some time on Thursday, but without success - the weather wasn't good though.

I'm not aware of anyone else heading down to see the Hawfinches Sue, but I would be very surprised if they've gone. Very early morning is the best time to see them, and only a calm dry day too. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteThey were still there on Friday, in the same area. They seem to like the smaller trees in front of the castle ie start looking within the bushes and trees where the end of the castle meets the stone garden wall. They get right in Sue and many may be on the ground feeding in the same spot. Also look at the top of the trees on both sides of the road. Friday produced the group of 9 birds, but there may well be individuals as well. Thanks to Paul for his original post, a lot of people have seen their first Hawfinch.
