A large flock (at least a dozen) with chaffinch off Offa's Dyke near Lymore pools along hedgerows. Two days ago.
3 wood sandpipers( I assume since didn't have a scope but noted them in the file from a couple of days before) still at Dolydd Hafren yesterday.
Gruesome remains of ? lapwing at far hide and starling at near one. Several heads and wings at the top of the steps at both hides. Are these the work of sparrowhawk or peregrine?
The road is horrendously rutted and deep in mud. Is the farmer trying to tell us something?

Interesting sightings Eryl. I would guess that the Sandpipers were Green as Wood are usually just a passage bird in spring and autumn. It sounds like the work of a Peregrine, I will try and pop down tomorrow to see what prey the raptor is eating. Was it accessible with a 2 wheel drive car?

DeleteThe killer of the Starlings is almost certainly Tawny Owl working its way through the roost. Owl pellets have been found there containing Starling bits. Not sure where the Starling legs are going - see if you can find them..!
ReplyDeleteNow you mention it mike, we have found several starling (and other small bird) parts in barn owl boxes and pellets. I will see what I can find!

DeleteHad a look today could only find the starlings and what looked like some owl pellets. My daughter wants to be an osteologist so she came with me to see what bones she could get unfortunately for her there was no sign of the lapwing
