I do find it hard to fathom the motives of the person, or persons, who stuffed kitchen roll into a nest box entrance at Llyn Coed-y-Dinas overnight. The ragged appearance of the paper is due to the incumbent Blue Tits trying to re-establish an entrance. Inside the box there were another three lengths of paper, i.e. the distance between perforations, (a further 2 feet).
The female had already laid 3 eggs.
While not in the same league as poisoning or shooting raptors, is it still a crime against wildlife?
Assuming the bird didn't try to drag it in there must be an idiot out there1
ReplyDeleteVery sad to hear about this, Chris. Hard to imagine what the motivation would be.
ReplyDeleteSection 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended by the Countryside and Rights of Way act 2000, makes it an offence for any person to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of ANY wild bird, whilst that nest is being built or is in use. Whether this incident constitutes 'damage' is debatable, but it is nevertheless abhorrent and unnecessary disturbance.
If anyone sees anyone tampering with nest boxes on any of our nature reserves, please let me know.

Perhaps all nest boxes should be placed much higher up. Will make monitoring more difficult, but a price worth paying due to the utter morons out there.
