Spotted Flycatcher

Thanks to the Mike Haigh manufactured open-fronted nest box, Spotted Flycatchers have fledged 2 broods in my garden. The first nest had 5 and the second had 3 eggs, and both fledged all the chicks, the most recent fledging

being on the 11th August, which I consider quite a late date. For several years I've tried to get acceptable shots of the nest, and this year I've found that the main prey species has been wasp, followed by small flies, but I've also seen orange underwing moth, and even a Red Admiral - in very short supply here this year. White butterfly sp. which are relatively abundant seem to have been ignored.

  1. Great stuff you lucky ole thing-we never get 'em in the garden these days, tho they nest just half a mile downtown. Are they Small Whites? One or two about, but butterflies seems be a thing of the past round here !
