Moult Season at Llyn-Coed-y-Dinas

As we progress through the year I feel we focus on migration, breeding species and summer and winter visitors, and they give us much interest. I have never really thought much about the moulting season, but the reserve at Llyn Coed-y-Dinas is proving its worth for this purpose. With wildfowl undergoing a flightless period, their safety from predation must be a prime factor in their preferred location.
Over the last 2-3 weeks, there have been maxima of 25 Mute Swans, 64 Coot, (where 3 pairs bred, and of the 64 only 3 were juvenile), 24 Tufted Duck, and an amazing count of 237 very drab-looking eclipse Mallard. Add in today's 2 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpipers passing through, a Little Ringed Plover 2 weeks ago, the intermittent Black Swan, Sacred Ibis (!), and a juvenile Ringed Plover for the last 2 days, and the site is worth a visit!

It was particularly appealing at dawn yesterday.........

  1. Nice one-shame the news re Ibis wasn't popped on straightaway.

  3. Thanks for this post Chris - as ever you've got me thinking, and it's good to look at things from a different perspective. These things are often fairly obvious when you think about them, but sometimes someone like you needs to start the process off! Love the photo too.
