Dolydd Hafren

Arrived at the reserve around 3pm, just as the snow started to fall again. I was welcomed by 2 Red Kites on the walk to the car park. Very few birds flying apart from a Sparrowhawk who made several appearances as she hunted along the hedgerows and through the fields. All the geese, Cormorants, Lapwing, and Oystercatchers were grounded. Plenty of Bullfinch about too. I topped up the feeders by the second hide and within minutes the Brambling showed up, although there were only 3 of them compared with the 14 mentioned a few days prior. The highlight was the stubble field before the second hide. This was providing a vital food source for many birds in this harsh weather. The Reed Bunting in particular were getting very close to me as I lay in snow. At the time of writing this, the snow drifts on the track down were at least 2 feet deep, so just bear that in mind if you decide to visit tomorrow!

  2. Cheers Kev! I get bored being inside and lying down in the snow with Reed Buntings all around is the perfect antidote to being stuck in an office all week.
