We were thrilled when we noticed a pair of spotted flycatchers prospecting for a nest-site in our garden, but were surprised at the site they chose - a tiny wall-hanging water bowl (I think) which has been in situ for years. If the weather recently had been wet, the nest would probably have been flooded, but thanks to the prolonged dry weather that has not been a problem. However, it's been a very hot position as it faces south, and is also very exposed and visible, so the risk of predation seemed pretty high. But as the 5 youngsters stood on the edge of the nest testing their wings this evening, it looks as though they may fledge very soon. They hatched only 12 days ago, and before long will be heading for Africa - I find that pretty amazing.
The photo isn't brilliant, as it was taken from about 25 metres away with 50X zoom, but it has been a delight watching the parents feeding and caring for their youngsters, who now barely fit into the nest.

Brilliant story Sue. Your Magpies must be dozier than ours!
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon. There are so many magpies around that we have been worried, but the youngsters are very quiet, as are the adults. Pretty exposed though. Still there this morning, and adults very attentive.
ReplyDeleteExcellent stuff-lucky you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kev. All 5 have now fledged successfully so that's quite a relief.
