Jays

Interesting that with the almost complete absence of acorns this Autumn, Jays are having to turn to beech mast. Unlike smaller species, they appear to take the whole fruit, rather than just the kernel.

  2. That's very interesting. Certainly around Welshpool there are hardly any to be found. The local wisdom is that the oaks were in flower at the time of "The Beast from the East", and the acorns did not set. I wonder if you are slightly higher and therefore flowering time was a few days later? It would be nice to know what others have observed around Mid-Wales.

  3. Guess the town is around 700 feet above sea level-not very high. But there were so many acorns on the floor round the lake where we walk that you had to watch your step!
Similar thing with apples:we had a monster crop -biggest ever , yet folk from other parts say theirs were rubbish!
