The bulk of the regular migrants to Llwynderw are now in. We are awaiting Common Whitethroat, Spotted Flycatcher and House Martin.
A count yesterday produced 7 Chiffchaffs, 7 Blackcaps, 1 Wood Warbler,  15 Willow Warblers, 5 Garden Warblers, 12 Pied Flycatchers, 7 Redstart, 2 Tree Pipits, 2 Swallows, and one cuckoo that gave good views as it flew over our heads. Although this was our second sighting of the cuckoo we first heard it on 11th April which is the earliest date yet for the farm.
After last year's deadly fight between Blue Tit and Pied Flycatcher over the bird box by the house, we erected two more close by. The male Redstart took a liking to one of them but the female has had other ideas and is busily building a nest in one of our bee hotels.
This is the 5th year that Ravens have nested in the spruce at the top of the garden. Two young are just about ready to fledge considering the noise emanating from the nest.

  1. Rather more sparse bird life this side of Llanidloes. We thought we heard a distant cuckoo yesterday over towards Y Fan. We'd normally go looking at CefnCenath (RadnorshireWT) or the Bidno valley towards Llangurig onthe old road from Llanidloes but alas wont be able to this year....
