Dolydd Hafren - Starling Roost

I should have been spending my holiday on Mull this week, but due to lockdown restrictions, it has turned into a staycation. I've spent almost every evening at Dolydd getting my wildlife fix. Every murmuration has been different. The birds assemble anytime between 15:45 and 16:15, usually over the farm opposite the first hide. The display varies wildly. If there are few predators about, they circle the reserve calmly before heading down to roost. The best displays occur when there are predators aplenty, peaking with 4 Sparrowhawks and a Peregrine, leading to those thrilling formations in the sky. When they do eventually land, it varies from the reed bed in the front of the first hide or any of the trees between the car park and the second hide. Here are my favourite moments from this week.

The Starlings turn from murmurating to diving into the reed bed.

The Starlings form the "ducks" head.

The Starlings lift off from the reed bed into the roosting trees.

  1. Good stuff Edd - keep em coming because I won't be going down there - may try and find somewhere a bit more distant for long lens shots

    1. Thanks Mark, will be back to weekend only visits now. Looking at where the birds move, I reckon you could see them from the layby on the main road near Glansevern or from Dyffryn lane.
