Dolydd Hafren

Osprey (Blue KA5) still on the reserve. He was fishing well away from the hide, although I did not see him catch anything. A lovely Cattle Egret showed up and a young Peregrine made a rapid pass across the reserve. There are large numbers of Goosander (counted 32 in one group), I guess they had a good breeding year! Also went to the reserve yesterday evening and counted around 30 Swift hunting over the meadow before the second hide and saw a Barn Owl on the walk home between Caerhowl and Hendomen.

    1. Cheers Mark. Hope your knee is recovering well, I bet you're looking forward to getting out and about with the camera again.

  2. I guess the longer he stays around, the more chance that he will turn up here next Spring, and hopefully attract a female. Males usually breed within 50 miles of their natal site. Food supply may be a problem with the plague of Goosanders, not to mention the Cormorants. How different from even 20 years ago, when both species were unusual on the Severn here.

    1. I'm surprised the fish haven't all been eaten yet. Between the Herons, Egrets, Cormorants, and Goosander, they must be clearing the place out. I wonder what the long term trend of fish population looks like in the river Severn.

  3. Another great set Edd - amazing that KA5 is visible on the Osprey's leg.

13th Aug is a good date for late Swifts - if anyone sees later ones, do let me know.

    1. Cheers Simon. You can just about read his leg ring if you can see his right side and crop a lot!
