April Shower - Hirundine Hour.

As so often happens at L.Cyd. in April, if the weather suddenly changes, migrants drop in. Around 11am this morning 25, or more, each of Swallow and Sand Martin appeared low over the water, and were joined by at least 5 House Martin. When the sun reappeared they moved on. I'm almost sure the Wagtail I saw was a White, but it did not linger long enough for me to be sure.

2 flyover B.H. Gulls were the only ones present. As in previous years they started to arrive at the end of February and built up through March to about 150-200. As in recent years they have also gone AWOL en masse, with about half that number prospecting at The Flash, and creating their usual high decibel accompaniment late into the darkness of recent evenings. However, I have also seen flocks of 15-50 heading North and North East, usually in the morning. Are they prospecting Shropshire Meres? I feel there is a high chance they will return to L. Cyd by the end of the month, though sites are sometimes abandoned.

Also present was 1 pair of Shoveler, a single G.C.Grebe, male Wigeon and Egyptian Goose, and the three Cormorant nests are still occupied. No Shelduck, Water Rail or Oystercatcher seen today.

One Brambling hanging on in the garden today.
