L CyD is worth always a visit, but especially in migration time during steady rain. This morning the surface was littered with foraging hirundines, mostly Sand Martins and Swallows, but with two House Martins too. A Reed Warbler was singing in front of the hide, near the nest of an incubating Coot. A Common Sandpiper was on the island, along with 120 Black-headed Gulls, jostling for territory and in a few cases beginning to bring sticks for a nest. Other birds included one Lapwing, one Great Crested Grebe, two Wigeon, a few Teal and Tufted Duck, with far fewer Canada Geese than was usual in winter. A few Cormorants were perched in the oak tree on the island where they nest.
