Very sad news from Llyn Coed y Dinas, as there are increasing numbers of Black-headed Gulls dying on site; a severe blow to this extremely important local bird site. Although not confirmed, it is likely this is a result of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) which, as everyone knows, is having a devastating impact on wild bird populations across the country.
MWT is dealing with the situation according to official guidance, but has also taken the difficult decision to close the reserve to the public for the time being, due to the risk to public health and biosecurity. At least one dead gull has already been found on a public path. Let us hope that the ultimate outcome is not too devasting.
