Turnstone is a common enough wader along the coast, but rare in Montgomeryshire. I watched one today on a gravel bank of the River Severn opposite Plas Maldwyn, the old workhouse/hospital. Also there were 2 Little Ringed Plovers, and large numbers of hirundines, including many nesting Sand Martins.
I also explored parts of Allt Goch above Llanidloes, where a Wood Warbler was singing. The woods are magnificent, accessible by easy trails, and the nestboxes busy with tits, Nuthatches and Pied Flycatchers. A Kingfisher was a nice surprise in Llanidloes, exactly where the Severn meets the Clywedog.
Finally I returned home via Llyn Coed-y-Dinas: my first visit following the avian flu outbreak. The remaining Black-headed Gulls (I saw 8 adults) looked healthy but there is no sign of the colony that was busy on the island a month ago, and certainly no juveniles.
Well done.
