Lymore Pools at Montgomery are locally important refuges for wintering duck, regularly attracting Shoveler and Gadwall, which are uncommon elsewhere in the county. Powis Estates have the shooting rights, and in recent years have restricted their shoots to pheasants. But this year they plan to include duck shooting - not illegal but regrettable, since wintering duck have found sanctuary there without disturbance. Recently Montgomeryshire Field Society enjoyed a day out there. I'll monitor the situation once the season starts, and may post an update.

Following a conversation with the Powis Estates Manager and the local shoot captain, agreement has been reached to restrict duck shooting to three brief beats during the whole season. The shooters will be made aware of sensitive species there, and will shoot "only Mallard."
ReplyDeleteWell done. Not easy. I hope they will not release Mallard next year.
