Green Woodpecker at Powis Castle and eagle news

Our first portrait of the year is this fine male Green Woodpecker in the grounds of Powis Castle on 6 Jan. Many thanks to Aneurin Lloyd.

Meanwhile, an immature White-tailed Eagle is only a few miles from the county boundary, at Llanuwchllyn at the southern end of Lake Bala. It has been in the area since 3 Jan, and could well investigate Lake Vyrnwy soon!

The Montgomeryshire Bird Species List has just been updated (to include last year's Black-winged Kite and Red-flanked Bluetail) and now stands at 260 species. It can be viewed by clicking County Reports at the top of the page.
