Early Swift, and Well-Travelled Brambling.

A Swift was present for about 20 seconds at L. CyD this morning - I regard 20th April as an early date for this species.

Also ringing details of the Norwegian Brambling I controlled on 17th December 2012 have just been received. . On 10th September 2012 it was ringed as a first winter male at Dividalen, about 50 miles south of Tromso, well within the Arctic Circle. The ringer's comment was that the bird was on passage as Brambling do not breed or winter in that area. It had travelled 2148 kms to Welshpool, and rather interestingly I re-caught it on 14th March this year as well. Still Brambling in the garden this week, and a total of 180 of them ringed from the first on 16th November and probably the last on 18th April.

  1. You're just getting greedy Chris with all those Brambling - and here's me being happy with a couple from time to time!! Interested in any recovery details for the birds you ringed - are they all part of a large flock that goes back to the same part of Scandinavia or do they disperse? Great to hear a Swift around - early though
