Red-rumped Something...

This from Graham Williams at Pwll Penarth yesterday is worth checking Hirundine flocks for -

"From the tower hide I was looking down on 30 or 40 Sand Martins feeding low over the water with a couple of Swallows when a bird with a rufous rump and tail streamers flashed into view.

This could only have been a Red-rumped Swallow but it provided only three very brief glimpses before circling up with the Martins and disappearing northwards. The Martins returned but frustratingly the R-r Swallow didn't....Unfortunately I didn't get a sight of the neck area (the bird was flying away from me) so I couldn't see the orange-red supercilium, neck and nape which would have clinched it beyond any doubt...."

  1. Did you see the underside of the tail? They almost look like they're wearing black trousers!
