Mallard Surprises
We were surprised this morning to see a pair of mallard on our garden 'wildlife pond', especially as this was re-dug and relined less than a year ago, and is far from established. They have spent much of the day on and around it, bathing, feeding, preening etc, but we weren't expecting to see the duck take and devour a frog as both her mate, and we, watched. She spent several minutes shaking and dunking it before finally managing to eat it. No wonder we haven't seen any frogspawn this year! We hope that they are maybe seeing the garden as acceptable breeding territory - maybe time will tell.
