Redwings and fieldfares

Flocks of around 30-40 fieldfares and similar numbers of redwings have been feasting on the windfall apples around an ancient apple tree in the garden during the last few days of bitterly cold weather, with several blackbirds joining them. Interestingly, although our bird feeders were much less busy today, presumably due to the  milder weather, the apple area was as busy as ever! We just hope that if there are further cold spells at the beginning of 2023, the thrush families will have left themselves some apples! Fortunately this particular tree usually hangs on to many of its fruit until well into February - we wish we knew the variety, but guess it's an old one.

There was much squabbling amongst the birds today, despite there being apples a-plenty. It was difficult to get near enough for any decent photos though, as they were very flighty.
