Avian flu update

Several of the Black-headed Gulls on the island at Llyn Coed-y-Dinas are dead or dying. This is suspected to be avian flu but has not been confirmed. Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust has reported the incident to DEFRA.

This sad news may or may not be connected with the recent announcement that "highly pathogenic bird flu has been confirmed in pheasants at Bettws Hall - 'Europe's leading game hatchery' - in Powys, mid-Wales. This will be a huge blow to the gamebird shooting industry."
