Red-flanked Bluetail - a county first
This amazing discovery - luckily backed up by a hasty photo through binoculars - was made by Sam Sharpe, one of the RSPB Lake Vyrnwy staff, in the western part of Dyfnant Forest on 29 Sep. At the end of a week of rare American warblers visiting Wales, this migrant from Scandinavia was totally unexpected. The neat white throat patch and habit of perching on top of conifers are characteristic of the species. Related to robins and nightingales, their closest breeding grounds are in Northern Finland. They migrate to south-east Asia for the winter and are not uncommon in the foothills of the Himalayas in North India. This one just set off in the wrong direction! Congratulations Sam, it's a great find.
