L Cyd Ducklings

Nice to meet Al Parott in the hide this afternoon, and fortunate because he agreed that we were looking at 2 Shelducklings, no more than a week old foraging on their own. An adult Shelduck slept on one of the islands, apparently oblivious to their presence. As far as I know this is the first recorded breeding of Shelduck at L. Cyd. The Spoonbill is still present, but keeps as far away from the hide as he can when I'm there! Up to 23 Mute Swans in the last few days, including Blue Darvic numbers 7FXA, 7FUJ, and 7HAU. Perhaps Tony Cross can let us have some info. on them?
A young Heron was hit a glancing blow by a car on the bypass as I returned to Welshpool, but it managed to fly on, and I missed it, though left a bit of rubber on the road!

  2. Hi Chris, I don't think the Shelducks 'technically' bred at LCyD, I saw them last night making their way down to the lake from near the airport, and I assume that this is how the adult got knocked over on the road. I cant believe that half (2 ducklings and 1 adult) of them have died already!! Very sad.

  3. it's a harsh upbringing - 4 weeks ago a female mallard had 8 duckling in pool at head of lake vyrnwy, a week later she had 2 and last week only 1 was left. Still something else survives because of it I suppose and if that kind of thing didn't happen we'd be even more overrun with mallard!
