DOGS
Hi all. Have been of air for a few days, but thanks for the responce to my blog on dogs. the problem though,is that this is not a new occurrance. Not long ago this item was brought up with the trust who in there wisdom (and for those who hav'nt been to Coed-y-Dinas lately) have put bins in different places along with signs asking dog owners to place there dog crap in thses bins. One of the most stupid decissions i've ever seen. For all it has achieved is to turn the reserve into a dog walking area. Oh. dog walkers say they pick there dog crap up and put it in the bins, But who empties these bins. dog walkers. (NO CHANCE) So i take it that these bins are being emptied by trust workers. So a question i would pose to the trust is should trust workers have to empty and dipose of this filth. .If i was to be asked i would say defineatly not. They have enough to do dealing there everyday tasks. The answer to this must be to remove these bins and place signs banning dogs from reserves. The saying give somebody an inch and they'll take a mile. but with some dog owners it's give them an inch and they'll take the country. and thats whats happening with our reserves..

ReplyDeleteWell said.
M W T Should not allow any dog on a Nature Reserve, lead or no lead, bag or no bag.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you Kevin, Coed-y-dinas is becoming a dog walking area, not too far from town, car park and no one around to ensure they clean up.
ReplyDeleteLast week in the Scilly's my group missed an Olive-backed Pipit because some dogs frightened it off within seconds of our sighting it, can't blame the dogs or the owners but there were a few mumblings from our group.
I would like to respond to the above comments on behalf of the trust. The dog bins have not been installed by the trust. They are provided by a local dog owner who uses the site regularly and was concerned by the amount of dog mess on the site. The gentleman regularly clears poo from the site, and takes full responsibility for emptying the bins. As Kevin says, trust staff have more than enough to do without emptying poo bins! As to banning dogs from the reserve, it is an option we have considered, but we are of the opinion that dog owners who ignore signs asking them to keep their dogs on a lead and pick up after them would also ignore signs banning dogs from the reserve, and we certainly don’t have the manpower to ‘police’ such a ban.
ReplyDeleteAs education officer for the trust, I am responsible for school visits, so as far as I am concerned, dog mess is not just a nuisance, but a health hazard too, and one of my first jobs when I arrive at the site is picking up dog poo. It’s a job I could well do without, but I don’t think there is an easy answer to this longstanding problem. If you have any comments or queries about the reserve, I can be contacted by e-mail - abi@montwt.co.uk
Fair comment Abi!
