Big Garden Birdwatch

Here in Montgomery, our Greenfinch and House Sparrow numbers are holding well; 13 and 8 respectively recorded in the hour long survey this morning.  Goldfinch also doing well with 7 and Chaffinch a little shy at 6 (normally we see 10 feeding on the ground).  Other species include Blackbird (4), Blue Tit (5), Coal Tit (1), Dunnock (3), Great Tit (2), Magpie (2), Robin (2), Woodpigeon (3), and Greater Spotted Woodpecker (1).  No Collared Dove or Long Tailed Tits, but we seldom see them in the garden.  Also no Starlings this year, but they have been staying in the fields which I guess is due to food being easier to find in this mild winter.

  1. Great to hear you have so many greenfinches Edward - we haven't seen a single one in the garden all winter. Our hour birdwatching was fairly quiet compared to normal - it's strange how it goes like that isn't it? Blue tits (15) topped the bill, chaffinch second(8), otherwise Great Tit(4), Magpie (2), Coal Tit (1), Goldfinch(1), Woodpigeon (1), Great Spotted Woodpecker (1), Blackbird (1) and the star of the show - a male Blackcap (1). A party of 8 Long-tailers arrived about 10 minutes after the count, along with the male Sparrowhawk!

  2. Blackcap and Sparrowhawk, both super bird to have in the garden! On the Greenfinch front, we have reasonably thick hedges in our garden, and along our road, which they seem to like to roost and nest in, as well as putting out Sunflower hearts for them which they love.
