Graham Williams reports that his annual count of occupied House Martin nests in the centre of Newtown has disappointingly confirmed a recent decline after a period of stability.
In 2010 there were 19 nests, followed by 20 in 2011 and 2012, a slump to 15 in 2013 and down to only 11 in 2014. Many, but not all, of the old nests are still in situ.
Graham comments that his survey covers a limited area only and hopes that other parts of the county are not similarly affected. Sadly my own experience of House Martin has seen a complete loss of nesting birds over the past 2 years from the Llanfyllin valley in which I live, and a fall in nesting pairs at Lake Vyrnwy.
