Wern water rail

The area where I spotted a water rail last Wednesday is now flooded after yesterday's rain, but today I had more good views of one in the same spot that I saw one last winter, about a quarter of a mile further on, which is less affected by flood water.
Much to my surprise, I also had good views of a kingfisher, which hovered by a bridge, having spotted me, before turning and flying back along the canal. The canal water was so murky after the rain that it would seem unlikely it would be able to fish there.
On Thursday, on the same stretch of water, there were two cormorants and a pair of goosander.

  1. Thanks Brian, but again just luck really. We've recently acquired a collie pup, so my morning walks are avoiding roads, and are mainly restricted to towpath routes - having said that, it's amazing how every day throws up surprises, and it's fun getting to know the same patch in all its weather and moods. This morning I saw the kingfisher again, fleetingly, and last week a stoat appeared from under a pile of clipped twigs and branches. Good flock of siskins in the alders behind our house this morning too.
