Autumn Gold

Yesterday's early morning walk on the Wern was punctuated by flashes of gold - from the group of 4 or 5 yellowhammers which flitted between field and hedgerow, to a flock of at least 100 goldfinches feeding in the upper branches of a yellowing ash, and the unprecedented sight in our garden of a Niger plant which has sprung up from the fallen seed of last winter's bird feeders and is in full flower. Whether its beautiful golden blooms will set seed remains to be seen, but if they do, perhaps the whole thing will turn full circle, and we will be able to watch siskins and goldfinches on the seed-heads in the coming weeks.

    How wonderful Sue. Ours has set seed before but never flowered. Yellowhammers a rarity down here but I did see a few crossbills up in th Hafren yesterday.
