A Great Egret with a history

Thanks to Julie Pearce for this story, and Mark Thomas for the photo: "this Great Egret landed in our pond in Aberbechan (near Abermule) on 7 Jan.  We managed to read the ring on its leg (red with AAR on it) and got back lots of information from the RSPB.  It’s a male that hatched in Avalon Marshes, Somerset, on 24/4/21, and fledged in June 2021. AAR has 2 siblings as well - who have headed to Suffolk & Worcestershire. He's been seen in Aberhafesp (July) & Pwllan near Llandinam in October. They did DNA analysis to establish that he is a male."

In other news, Eryl Selly reports 2 Goldeneye, 2 pairs Goosander, 1 Great Black-backed Gull at Llyn Mawr (near Clatter) on 12 Jan, with Tufted Duck, Coot, and Fieldfare in the fields, but no sign of the usually resident Kestrel. Thanks Eryl.

  1. Becoming increasingly interesting this - none of the 5 Gt Egret I've photo'd at LCyD these past few months were carrying plastic so we're starting to get a decent concentration. Is it too much to hope that maybe just maybe a couple of the birds will be of breeding age and hang around to do just that? (Long-distance) eyes I suspect on the Welshpool Heronry/'Egretry' these next 3 months!

  2. What a treat Julie and Mark - so good to have the history too. Well done!

Good to hear your 'spots' too Eryl - haven't been to Llyn Mawr for a long time, but must change that soon.
