Cors Dyfi

A visit to Cors Dyfi this afternoon and thankfully the signs of Spring are finally here. The small birds on the feeders looked gorgeous in their new breeding plumage, bullfinch and snipe were around on the reserve as were the calls of many waders, curlew, oystercatchers and common sands I picked up. Red kites and a peregrine also made an appearance as did a rather bold heron on one of the pools.
Frogs and Toads have been laying their spawn too and this particular warty follow allowed me to get quite near him for a photo opportunity.
Our ospreys should be leaving their African wintering grounds around now so hopefully the cross-winds won't be to unkind. A very happy Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant/St. Davids Day to all.

  1. Emyr- Syt wyt to fy'n machgen i?
My brother in law from Bryncrug rang me today to say that he thinks he and his collegues at 'Halo' in Tywyn saw 3 Ospreys on the Broadwater in the Dysynni Valley a couple of days ago I told him it was probably a bit early for them but is it 'impossible' that they were the 'gwalch'? Some say they were buzzards, others kites but Will my brother in law and no idiot says he thinks they were Ospreys. What do you reckon mate?

  2. helo El - dwi'n iawn diolch ti, bron yn barod am dymor arall!!
Ospreys tend to be seen around about now but do not come in proper numbers until around the 20th of March each year. There have been two sighting of osprey in the UK to date this year - one in Devon 33nd Feb and one in Scotland yesterday. To see three ospreys together of course in Towyn at this time of year would be hugely unlikely, but as you know, you never know with birds! All of the Roy Dennis radio tracked birds are still at their wintering grounds in Africa - ospreys take around three weeks to travel back north in the Spring.
Welai di yn o' fuan El.

  4. Diolch i ti Em (thanks Emyr). I'll pass the information onto my brother in law Will. Fair play to the lads at 'Halo' Tywyn for being observant anyway. I'll make sure you get a free ice-cream the next time you visit 'Halo' in T'y'wyn Merionydd!
