spotted flycatchers fledged

'Our' spotted flycatchers left the nest this morning - the adults have been busy all day, apparently without a break, catching flies and entertaining us with their acrobatics. What amazing little birds they are. The garden is alive with young families - can't remember such a good year - bullfinches, house sparrows, great spotted woodpeckers, swallows, chaffinches, blue tits, great tits, blackbirds, robins - and sedge warblers just beyond the hedge! A hobby was mobbed by several very vociferous swallows above the house this morning - our first sighting here this year.

Nest is well hidden under ivy on our oil tank.

  1. great stuff Sue and looks like they'll be fledging soon, if they haven't already done so - would love to have spotted fly nesting in the garden but as I haven't yet seen the bird here I guess the chances must be pretty slim!!

  2. Thanks Mark. Yes, they fledged Friday. Hope spotted flies pay you a visit one of these days - it's 4 or 5 years since they were here, so who knows? Fingers crossed!
PS Did you manage to condense my 2 posts into one?
