Last year there were reports of a new strain of Avian Pox in particular affecting Great Tits and spreading through the country - check out the BTO reports on this, they give advice on what to do and how to report cases. If it looks/sounds like what you saw perhaps worth contacting them (and cleaning your feeders regularly of course!!)
good point on cleaning the feeders - I'll do that - it did'nt appear to stop it feeding, but I have to say it looked awful!
It would do! Feeders I normally clean every couple of weeks with a very dilute solution of bleach, rinse and air dry etc - bird baths I probably don't clean enough, normally every 3 days or so but the BTO say daily (not sure how you're supposed to air dry a bird bath in this summer weather!!)
