As I write this, rain has fallen without respite for 50 hours in Welshpool. The Severn is in major flood - the largest I have seen in July, and rivalling the worst of winter. Llyn Coed-y-Dinas has suffered a huge backflow from the Severn, with the car park flooding, and the gate well under water. Having waded to the hide, the sight of geese feeding on the tops of reeds, a single displaced Reed Warbler, the islands all but disappeared (with Black-Headed Gull nests under water), and these Great-Crested Grebe also displaced, the whole vista is pretty depressing.
Add to that, the effect on Swifts, which should just be hatching young, and the swallows and martins, plus the ground-nesters and it is going to be disastrous. More heavy rain is forecast for tonight and early tomorrow.

Awful!
ReplyDeleteWe need the rain.
ReplyDeleteI assume that is a humorous comment. Five inches in four days, in June, has done so much damage to our wildlife, and indeed, to the lives of many people.
ReplyDeleteNot humorous.
ReplyDeleteI agree Nigel - your comment was not remotely humorous - far from it
ReplyDeleteI was being very serious when I said "We need the rain" ok.
