Egret and Heron News

Little Egret: Claire Seddon has been watching one pair making feeding flights to a hidden nest in the Welshpool heronry. This is (at least) the second year Little Egrets have nested here. 

Grey Heron: Dave and Helen Eakins have counted 32 apparently occupied nests in the Welshpool heronry, which is by far the largest heronry in the county. The young are fledging this week, a few weeks ahead of the Little Egrets, which appear to have hatched only recently. 

Great Egret: Will Ferguson reports two Great Egrets at Dolydd Hafren today. One flew upstream showing an all-black bill - which is BREEDING CONDITION! They may not nest in the county this year, but surely they will soon. It would be a first breeding record for Wales.

    Excellent new about the Little and Great Egrets. Can anyone advise me as to the best position to take some shots at the Welshpool heronry and exactly where is it?

    Brian, the Welshpool heronry is on private land above the secondary school tennis courts, where Gungrog Hill starts to climb. The herons and egrets nest in tall spindly spruce, with no viewpoints from any public place! Claire is able to watch the comings and goings from the deck in her garden, but even that gives no view of nests. It's the most well hidden, un-photogenic heronry in the county.
